Kitchen Remodel in Houston: What to Expect and What It Costs

A kitchen remodel is one of the biggest home improvement projects you can take on. It is also one of the most rewarding. A well-done kitchen makes your home more comfortable, more functional, and more valuable. But if you have never been through one, the process can feel overwhelming.

Here is what a kitchen remodel in Houston actually looks like, from start to finish, so you know what to expect before you commit.

Start with what is not working

Before you think about countertops and cabinet colors, take a step back. What bugs you about your kitchen right now? That is where the remodel should start.

Common complaints we hear from Houston homeowners:

  • Not enough counter space for cooking
  • Cabinets that are falling apart or too dark
  • A layout that makes the kitchen feel cramped
  • Old appliances that do not work well
  • Poor lighting, especially over the work areas
  • Flooring that is stained, cracked, or outdated

Write down the things that bother you most. That list becomes the foundation of your remodel plan. It keeps you focused on what actually matters instead of getting pulled into trends that do not solve your problems.

What drives the cost

Kitchen remodels in Houston range widely. A cosmetic refresh (new paint, hardware, and countertops) costs far less than a full gut-and-rebuild. Here are the biggest factors:

Layout changes. Moving plumbing or electrical is where costs jump. If you keep the sink, stove, and fridge in the same spots, the plumbing and electrical stay put and the budget stays lower. Moving them means opening walls, rerouting pipes, and pulling permits.

Cabinets. This is usually the single biggest line item. Stock cabinets cost less. Semi-custom and custom cabinets cost more but give you exactly what you want. Refacing or painting existing cabinets is the cheapest option if the boxes are still solid.

Countertops. Granite, quartz, butcher block, laminate. The material you choose and the square footage of your counters drive this cost. Quartz is the most popular choice we see in Houston right now.

Flooring. Tile and luxury vinyl plank are the go-to picks for Houston kitchens. Both handle humidity well and clean up easily. Hardwood works too with proper acclimation.

Appliances. New appliances can be a big part of the budget or not, depending on what you choose. We install whatever you buy. We do not mark up appliances.

The process, step by step

1. Walk-through and estimate. We come to your home, look at the kitchen, and talk through what you want. You get a written price that covers everything: demo, materials, labor, and cleanup. No hidden fees.

2. Material selection. You pick your cabinets, countertops, tile, and fixtures. We can point you to suppliers or work with ones you choose. Take your time here. Changing your mind after the job starts costs money.

3. Demo. We tear out the old kitchen. Cabinets, counters, flooring, backsplash. Everything that is going gets removed and hauled away. This is the messy part. It usually takes a day or two.

4. Rough work. If plumbing, electrical, or framing needs to change, it happens now, before the walls close up. This is also when any permits get inspected.

5. Install. Cabinets go in first, then countertops, then flooring, then backsplash, then fixtures and hardware. Each step builds on the last. This is where the kitchen starts to take shape.

6. Finish work. Paint, trim, caulk, final electrical (outlets, switches, under-cabinet lights), and appliance hookups. We do a final walkthrough with you to make sure everything looks right and works right.

7. Cleanup. We leave your kitchen clean and ready to use. No dust, no debris, no nails on the floor.

Common mistakes to avoid

Skipping the written estimate. If a contractor gives you a number over the phone without seeing the kitchen, that number is meaningless. Get a written price after a real walk-through.

Choosing the cheapest bid. In Houston, there is no shortage of contractors. The cheapest one is rarely the best one. Ask how long they have been in business, whether they handle the work themselves or sub it out, and whether they give you a written timeline.

Not planning for how you will eat. A kitchen remodel takes a few weeks. Set up a temporary coffee station, microwave, and cooler in another room. It makes the process much easier to live through.

Changing your mind mid-project. Changes after demo cost more and push the timeline out. Make your material decisions before the work starts and stick to them.

Houston-specific things to know

Houston's heat and humidity affect material choices. Solid wood cabinet doors can warp if the house is not climate-controlled during the remodel (common if the HVAC is disconnected for rough work). Flooring needs to acclimate to indoor humidity before installation. And any plumbing changes in a slab foundation require cutting the concrete, which adds cost and time.

These are things a contractor who works in Houston regularly already knows. If your contractor is surprised by any of them, that is a red flag.
